Certified IT asset disposal · Adelaide & surrounds

Your old computers still hold everything.

Client files. Patient records. Staff tax details. Deleting a folder does not remove any of it. ByteCycle collects retired business IT, destroys the data to a certified standard, and hands you a certificate for every single device.

Why proper ITAD matters

Retired hardware is the easiest way to leak your business.

Most small businesses replace their computers every three to five years. Almost nobody has a proper process for what happens next. Three things go wrong, and all three are avoidable.

01

The data is still on the drive

Emptying the recycle bin, formatting the disk or reinstalling Windows leaves the files exactly where they were. Anyone with a $40 recovery tool and ten minutes can pull client files, patient notes and payroll records straight off a machine you thought was clean. On SSDs, overwriting does not reliably work at all, which is why we use the manufacturer's own secure erase commands.

02

You are not allowed to bin it

E-waste has been banned from landfill in South Australia since September 2013. That means every computer, monitor, printer and cable your business retires is a compliance obligation, not rubbish. Putting it in the skip is an offence, and it is the kind of thing that surfaces later.

03

Nobody can prove what happened

The usual path is a staff member's mate with a ute, or a bloke who "takes old computers". No serial numbers recorded. No chain of custody. No record of what was wiped or where the gear went. If a drive from your office turns up on a marketplace listing with your client files on it, you have no evidence of anything and no defence to offer.

The bit that costs money

Under the Privacy Act, disposing of personal information badly is a notifiable data breach.

Australian Privacy Principle 11 requires an organisation to take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify personal information it no longer needs. Handing a loaded laptop to an unvetted third party is not a reasonable step. Serious or repeated breaches carry penalties up to $50 million, and for a law firm or a medical practice the reputational damage lands well before any fine does.

How it works

Six steps, and you only have to be involved in the first one.

We handle the rest. You get certificates, a manifest of every unit, and the knowledge that nothing walked out the door.

STEP 01

Collect

You tell us what you have and we come to you. Free pickup anywhere across greater Adelaide on ten units or more, from the Hills out to the coast and up through the wine country.

Scheduled around your hours
STEP 02

Inventory

Every device is logged by serial number and tagged on arrival. That list becomes your manifest and it is what makes the rest of the process auditable.

Serialised, chain of custody
STEP 03

Wipe

Certified data destruction using BitRaser Drive Eraser. Hard drives are overwritten and verified. SSDs get ATA Secure Erase or NVMe sanitize. Dead or high-sensitivity drives get physically shredded.

NIST SP 800-88 Clear / Purge / Destroy
STEP 04

Certify

A Certificate of Destruction is issued for each device. It records the serial number, the method, the tool and version, the result, and is signed by the operator and an independent witness.

One certificate per device
STEP 05

Refurbish

What is still worth using gets tested, cleaned, repaired, upgraded and given a licensed operating system. Anything not worth saving gets pulled for parts or recycled properly.

Roughly 65% of machines are recoverable
STEP 06

Rehome

Refurbished machines are sold cheaply to local families, students and community organisations. Your old fleet ends up doing schoolwork in a house down the road instead of leaching into soil.

Low-cost, warranty included

Our mission

Businesses are throwing away perfectly good computers. Families nearby cannot afford one. We think the gap between those two facts is the whole business.

For your business

A legal, documented, zero-hassle way to retire IT. Certificates you can produce to a regulator, an auditor or a client without scrambling. No more cupboard full of dead laptops and no more wondering where the last lot went.

For a local family

A working laptop for a few hundred dollars instead of two thousand. Digital inclusion is not an abstract policy problem. It is a kid who cannot do their homework because the only device in the house is a phone.

For the ground

E-waste carries lead, mercury and cadmium. Every device we divert is one less of those leaching into soil and groundwater. Refurbishing beats recycling, because the greenest computer is the one already built.

Who we are

ByteCycle is run by two mates from Adelaide, one based up north and one in the Hills. Joe handles the relationships and the paperwork, Josh handles the technology and the process. We are a registered South Australian company, fully insured, and we do this properly or we do not do it at all. No cutting corners on the wipe, ever, because a certificate is only worth something if the person signing it actually did the work.

We are a young business. That means you get the founders on the phone, a fair price, and the kind of care you do not get from a national contractor who subcontracts the job three layers down.

Who we work with

If you have computers with data on them, we can help.

The usual candidates are businesses running a fleet on a three to five year refresh cycle, or anyone with records they are legally obliged to protect.

The standards we work to

You can check every claim on this page.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev 1 The international benchmark for media sanitisation. We use Clear for standard hard drives, Purge for SSDs and modern storage, and Destroy where the data warrants physical shredding. Every wipe is verified, not assumed.
Privacy Act 1988, APP 11 Requires reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify personal information. Our certificates are the documented evidence that you took those steps. Serious or repeated breaches attract penalties of up to $50 million.
SA EPA e-waste ban E-waste has been banned from direct landfill in South Australia since September 2013 under the Environment Protection (Waste to Resources) Policy. Every collection we do is a compliance event, documented.
AS/NZS 5377 The Australian framework for the collection, storage and destruction of e-waste. We follow it for handling and storage, and can pursue full certification if a client or tender requires it.
Chain of custody Serial numbers recorded at collection, logged through wiping and refurbishment, retained for a minimum of seven years. Your manifest is available on request, and an audit-ready reporting pack can be added to any job.
Insurance Public liability cover in place before we touch a single device. Data-breach cover is in progress, ask us where it is at if that matters for your tender.
