Home / About us

Two mates, one van, and a very specific gripe.

We kept seeing the same thing. Businesses paying to get rid of computers that still had years of life left in them, and families a few suburbs away who could not afford one. Nobody was joining those two dots, so we did.

Who you are dealing with

No call centre. No account manager. Just us.

When you ring ByteCycle, one of the two people below picks up. The person who quotes your job is the person who does your job.

Joe

Relationships, quoting, compliance

Joe spent years in banking before moving into technology, and now builds business applications for Westpac by day. That means he has sat on the client side of a compliance audit and knows exactly what a business needs to be able to produce when someone asks what happened to a retired laptop.

He is also the one who does your quote, your certificates and your paperwork. If something needs to be right on paper, it is Joe's problem.

What Joe does

  • Quotes, bookings and pickups
  • Certificates of Destruction and chain-of-custody records
  • Compliance questions and audit-ready reporting
  • Anything to do with the resale side and community partners

Josh

Technology, process, the van

Josh runs the technical side. The wipe station, the tooling, the drive docks, the shredder, and most of the driving. He is based up north, which is a large part of why our pickup run covers the whole of Adelaide rather than just one corner of it.

He is the person who actually performs the sanitisation and signs the operator line on your certificate. If a drive will not wipe clean, Josh is the one who tells you it is getting shredded instead of pretending otherwise.

What Josh does

  • Collection runs and secure handling
  • Inventory, serial logging and chain of custody
  • Certified wiping, verification and physical destruction
  • Testing, refurbishment and parts

Why we started

The gear was fine. The process was broken.

Retired business hardware is not rubbish. It is a working computer with somebody's private information still sitting on the drive, and no plan for what happens to either of them.

Most businesses we talk to have a cupboard. In that cupboard are laptops that were perfectly good when they were replaced, and on those laptops are client files, patient records or payroll data that nobody has actually removed. Eventually somebody needs the cupboard space. That is when it goes to a bloke with a ute, or into a skip, and everybody hopes for the best.

Meanwhile the e-waste ban means that skip is illegal, and the Privacy Act means the data on those drives was always your responsibility. Neither of those facts is going away, and neither of them is complicated once somebody actually handles the job properly.

So we built the boring, correct version of it. Collect the gear, log every serial number, wipe it to a real standard, prove it with a certificate, then refurbish what is worth saving and get it to a family who needs it. That is the whole business.

How we split the work

Somebody is accountable at every step.

Two people means nothing falls through a gap between departments. It also means we only take on what we can actually do properly in a given week.

Joe looks after

  • Your first call, your quote and your booking
  • Working out what you have and what it will cost
  • Certificates, manifests and audit documentation
  • Compliance questions, tenders and reporting packs
  • Community partners, schools and charity distribution

Josh looks after

  • Collection, transport and secure storage
  • Serial-number inventory and chain of custody
  • Certified wiping, verification and shredding
  • Refurbishment, testing and quality control
  • The tooling, the process and the standards we work to

What we will not do

A certificate is only worth something if the work behind it was real.

These are not marketing promises. They are the rules we run the business on, and they are the reason we will occasionally turn work away.

No certificate without a completed, verified wipe

Every wipe is read back and confirmed. If verification fails, the drive gets shredded and the certificate says so. It never says "verified" when it was not.

Nothing moves without a serial number on it

Devices are logged at collection and stay accounted for through wiping, refurbishment and resale. If a unit cannot be identified, it does not leave our possession.

Certificates are never backdated or altered

If a certificate needs correcting, we issue a new one referencing the original. The record is the record.

We turn down work we cannot do properly

If a job is beyond what we can handle in the time or to the standard it needs, we say so and point you somewhere that can. A rushed job in this industry is worse than no job.

Your data does not become our stock problem

A machine is wiped and verified before it goes anywhere near the refurbishment bench. There is no scenario where a device is resold with your information on it.

Where we work

Greater Adelaide, and we come to you.

From the Adelaide Hills across to the coast, and out through the Barossa and McLaren Vale. Free pickup on ten units or more anywhere in the metro area. If you are further out, call us and we will work something out.

We are a registered South Australian company, fully insured, and we work around business hours because we know you cannot have someone in the office at 2pm on a Tuesday to hand over a laptop.
